What occult themes are found in the Harry Potter books? Is the witchcraft “real” or just “mechanical”? What does the Bible say about Christians being involved in such things as witchcraft, divination, and spirit contact? How can you protect yourself and your children from the occult influences so prevalent in books and on television today? Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: It’s More than Just Fantasy
Harry
Potter and the Chamber of Secrets:
Parsel tongue and an Enchanted Diary
Harry
Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:
Dementors and Animagi
Harry
Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Death
and Resurrection
Yes, the Harry Potter books
are written as fantasy. BUT, first of all, J. K. Rowling did a lot of
research into actual witchcraft beliefs and practices, and she put a
lot of that into these books. These articles give a brief overview of
the plot of the books and point out some places where you can find
practices or philosophies related to witchcraft and the occult.
Questions
About Harry Potter (Dr. John Ankerberg)
Dr. Ankerberg answers 15
questions that have been raised about the Harry Potter books,
including: Does the Bible say anything about the beliefs and practices
found in Harry Potter? What about other fantasy literature (i.e., Snow
White)? It’s not
“real” sorcery or magic, is it? If it’s getting kids to read,
why are you objecting to it?
The
Occult and Harry Potter
If you’d like a quick
reference to where occult practices are found in the Harry Potter
books, this article gives you quotes from the four books that
illustrate more than 20 different occult themes.
Harry
Potter Lures Kids to Witchcraft with Praise from Christian Leaders (Berit
Kjos)
Kids are being drawn to
witchcraft as a result of reading Harry Potter, so why are so many
Christian leaders endorsing or at least not issuing warnings about the
books?
God’s
Warning About Witchcraft: Definition of Terms from Deuteronomy 18
When God says not to practice
divination, sorcery, witchcraft, necromancy etc., in Deuteronomy 18,
what do those terms mean? We asked several scholars to explain.
What
Do Witches Believe?
This may be one of the hardest
questions to answer, because the short answer is “pretty much
whatever they want to believe.” In fact the “rede” (creed) of
Wicca (contemporary witchcraft) is “an it harm none, do what you
will.” We have taken quotes from various occult and witchcraft
sources to try to give you a flavor of the variety of beliefs being
taught.
What
is the Occult? (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)
If you are not familiar
with the term “occult,” this article will help you understand the
underlying principles upon which Witchcraft is based.
Bewitched
by Harry Potter (Berit Kjos)
What is it about Harry
Potter that is so appealing? Why is it dangerous for children and
adults? The second part of this article, “How to Resist Deception”
gives practical tips for Christians who want to protect themselves and
their children.
“Put
on the Full Armor of God” (Berit Kjos)
Putting on the armor is
more than just repeating the verse. Berit Kjos explains steps she
learned to go through to help her “resist in the evil day.” This
explanation is particularly geared toward children, who can use her
method to protect themselves at school on a daily basis.
Deliverance
from the Occult (Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon)
Finally, what if you have
already gotten caught up in the allure of witchcraft or some other
form of occult involvement? You are not powerless. You are not
helpless. God can deliver you. Drs. Ankerberg and Weldon draw from the
experience of Dr. Kurt Koch to show you the steps you can take to be
set free.
